Bhagavatgeeta Chapter 2 Shlokas 1-9
Om| May the Lord Ganapati bestow his blessings upon the seeker to understand the Geetashastra as it needs to be understood||
Tam tatha krupayavishtam ashrupurnakulekshanam|
Vishhedantamidam vakyam uvacha Madhusudhana||1||
Madhusudhan, then addressed the lamenting, helpless, dejected Arjuna-
Kutastvaam kashmalamidam vishame samupasthitam|
Anaaryajushtam aswargyam akeertikaramarjuna||2||
Klaibyam ma smagamah partha naitad tvayyupapadyate|
Kshudram hridaya dourbalyam tyaktvottishta parantapa||3||
Arjuna, from where has this idea of cowardice, of lowliness, of ill fate, polluted your mind at this hour of need? Don't surrender yourself to this unmanly attitude as this doesn't suit you. Give up your unheroic attitude and stand up to fight the war.
Arjuna replied,
Katham Bheeshmamaham sankhye Dronancha Madhusudhana|
Ishubhihi pratiyotsyaami pujaarhavarosudhana||4||
How can I aim arrows in the war at my beloved Bheeshma and Aacharya Drona?
Gurunahattva hi mahanubhavaan
Shreyo bhoktum bhaikshyamapeeha loke|
Hattvartha kamaangurunihaiva
Bhunjeeya bhogan rudhirapradigdhaan||5||
It is better to survive by seeking alms than to kill the great Gurus to regain our land(and hence our livelihood). We would be relishing the luxuries soaked in the blood of our beloved people (if we fight this war to win back our land).
Na chaitadvidmaha kataranno gareeyo
Yadva jayema yadi va no jeyeyuhu||
Yaneva hattva na jijeevishaama
Tevasthita pramukhe Dhartarashtraha||6||
I am confused as to what is better; I do not know who will win the war. Without whom our lives can't be the same we have to confront those same Dhartarasthras in the war.
Kaarpanyadoshopahrutaswabhaavaha
Prucchaami tvam dharmasammudhachetaha||
Yacchreyasyaat nischitam bruhi tanme
Shishyasteham shaadhi maam tvam prapannam||7||
Dispirited by my helplessness, confused by the righteousness of our decision, I am asking you to guide me towards the right path as I have surrendered myself to you as I am your disciple.
Nahi prapashyaami mamaapunudyaat
Yachshokamuchoshanamindiyaanaam||
Avaapya bhumaavasapnamruddham
Raajyam suraanamapi chaadhipatyam||8||
I don't see any way that would liberate my senses from this grief. This grief will not diminish even if I unanimously become the king of the devatas also.
Evamuktva hrushikesham gudakeshaha parantapa|
Na yotsya iti Govindamuktva tooshneem babhuva ha||9||
Thus saying, Arjuna declared to Krishna that he wouldn't fight the war.
Abstract:
Arjuna continued his lamentations without respite. He is so deeply engulfed by misery that he finally refuses to fight the war.
